Food: Bearded dragons are omnivores. They have strong jaws and like to crunch and crush hard-shelled insects. As well as eat greenery like leaves and flowers.

Size: There are 8 species which have different colouring, patterns and scales to each other. A fully grown adult can be between 30 – 55 cm, from head to tail tip. Most have a tail as long as their body.

Appearance: They have a ‘beard’ of spikes under their chin, which they puff up when they feel unsafe. Covered in ‘sand-coloured’ scales, they make good camoflage for their natural desert habitats.

Bearded dragons make excellent pets. They are one of the most easy-going and relaxed of the reptiles. Whilst most like to live alone, some may prefer the company of another ‘beardie’. They need to be kept warm, so a heated area in their habitat is needed. As well as a cooler area to cool down too. Climbing is their favourite activity, so rocks and branches keep them entertained.

Consider rehoming a rescue animal. There are many charities which offer rehoming schemes: Blue Cross * Animal Rescue & Care * RSPCA
