reptile * cold blooded* diurnal

up to 20 years years

Food: Like pythons, cornsnakes are constrictors, so their squeeze their prey. Usually they eat mice, rats, birds and bats. Which gave them the nickname of the ‘red rat snake’.

Size: They can grow anywhere between 60 to 180cm long.

Appearance: Slender snakes, orange or brownish-yellow in colour. They have patterns of red blotches outlined in black running down their backs. On their bellies they have a black and white checkered pattern. Their markings and colour will depend on the region the cornsnake is from.

Cornsnakes make excellent pets. They are a great choice for a first-time snake owner. Cornsnakes are generally docile so easy to handle. One end of their enclosure needs to be warmed, and they need a hiding place in both the warm and cold part. They enjoy climbing too, so branches will keep them interested and happy. Albino cornsnakes are beautiful. With lighter markings and red eyes.

If you’re considering a pet then why not contact your local animal charity to consider rehoming a rescued animal. These nationwide charities also offer rehoming schemes: Blue Cross * Animal Rescue & Care * RSPCA
