Food: Geckos eat plants and animals including insects, fruit and spiders. They use their long sticky tongues to snatch their food. Some geckos will wiggle their tail just before they’re about to strike!

Size: Some can grow to over 30cm, however the most common geckos grow to about 20cm from head to tip of their tail.

Appearance: Geckos are adorable. Their large eyes and quaint features make them very cute. They have a short body, large head and a tapering tail. Their toes or digits spread out on each foot to give them extra stability when climbing walls. They come in make colours; grey, brown, yellow, orange and pink.

Geckos make excellent pets. Their calm temperament makes them ideal pets. Their enclosure should have branches for climbing, a hiding place, water bowl and a lid to stop them escaping! Some species require heat pads to keep them comfortable. A gecko has the unique skill, that if they feel threatened they will let their tail fall off. There’s no need to panic if this does happen. It will grow back.

If you’re considering getting a pet it’s worth contacting your local animal charity to see if they have any animals which need rehoming. Or you can get in touch with these nationwide charities which have rehoming schemes: Blue Cross * Animal Rescue & Care * RSPCA
