Food: Guinea pigs love munching leafy greens and vegetables, such as broccoli or kale. They like to graze and will eat throughout the day. They also enjoy hay & grass. Their teeth never stop growing so they need to continuing wear them down.

Size: They can grow between 20-50cm long and their tail is only short. About 2cm in length. The males are usually larger and heavier than the females.

Appearance: Guinea pigs are really cute with their big eyes and stocky build; compact & rounded bodies, short legs and no tail. Their bodies are covered in hair which comes in different colours and markings. Some hair grows long, others have short hair. Their feet have sharp claws and hairless soles.

Guinea pigs make excellent pets. ‘Piggies’ can be affectionate. They don’t like to live alone, so at least 2 should be kept as pets. They need a large enclosure or hutch with plenty of room for them to run & play around. As well as an area they can hide under. Needing feeding every day with fresh vegetables/fruit, as well as well stocked hay and drinking water. They poop frequently so you’ll find you’ll need to clean out their home each week to keep your pets happy and healthy.

If you’re considering having a guinea pig as a pet why not rehome a rescue animal. Check out your local animal charity or take a look at these nationwide charities and their rehoming schemes: Blue Cross * Animal Rescue & Care * RSPCA
