All about Sun beetle

  • invertebrate
  • herbivore
  • diurnal

origin:

tropical Africa

habitat:

forest floor

life span:

6 months
Food: Sun beetles like to eat ripe and rotten fruit & wood. Before they transform into adult beetles, they are white grubs. They live underground and feed on rotten vegetation until they are ready to emerge as an adult, which takes about 5 months.
Size: Most sun beetles grow up to about 2.5cm in length. Their larvae can grow as big as 6cm.
One of the easiest beetles to keep as a pet. They like to burrow so like a thick later of soil, but also like an enclosure with height. They can fly but have a terrible sense of direction! Make sure to have a lid on their tank. Their natural habitat is warm so need to be kept at a temperature around 25 degrees throughout the day. And fed twice a week on a range of fruits. Unlike most beetles they are awake during the day so enjoyable to watch & marvel at.
