Food: Sun beetles like to eat ripe and rotten fruit & wood. Before they transform into adult beetles, they are white grubs. They live underground and feed on rotten vegetation until they are ready to emerge as an adult, which takes about 5 months.
Size: Most sun beetles grow up to about 2.5cm in length. Their larvae can grow as big as 6cm.
Appearance: Bright yellow and red-brown shell, with glossy black heads and underbody. What appears to be their shell on their back is in fact their wings. They use their antennae to small, taste, touch and detect motion.
Sun Beetles make excellent pets. One of the easiest beetles to keep as a pet. They like to burrow so like a thick later of soil, but also like an enclosure with height. They can fly but have a terrible sense of direction! Make sure to have a lid on their tank. Their natural habitat is warm so need to be kept at a temperature around 25 degrees throughout the day. And fed twice a week on a range of fruits. Unlike most beetles they are awake during the day so enjoyable to watch & marvel at.
