Food: Most are herbivores. Tortoises mainly eat grass, leaves, flowers and some fruits. Some also eat insects and worms.
Size: They can vary in size. Some can be as small as 10cm and others can be large. Galapagos giant tortoises can grow over 1.2m in length.
Appearance: All tortoises have a hard domed shell on their back to protect them from predators. If they feel unsafe, they will hide inside their shell. A tortoise’s shell shape and markings is like their fingerprint; unique to them. Their feet are short and thick and can look like an elephants.
Tortoises make excellent pets. Caring for a tortoise can be rewarding and should be considered carefully before taking one as a pet. They have a long lifespan so are a long-term commitment. Their enclosure should allow them to burrow, give them shade/shelter and have enough to stimulate them. They like to feed throughout the day so their food should be kept available all day, as well as access to drinking water. Not all species of tortoises hibernate. Ensure to get guidance on the best practice for the species you take home.
