Let’s start with a simple question: when was the last time reptile keepers got a bit of recognition?

Dog owners have parks, events, and more themed days than they can keep track of. Cat owners have basically claimed the internet. Meanwhile, reptile keepers are quietly in the background—adjusting thermostats, misting enclosures, and explaining (again) that no, their snake is not plotting an escape.

That’s exactly why National Reptile Keepers Day (NRKD) exists.

What is National Reptile Keepers Day?

National Reptile Keepers Day is a proposed annual event set for May 24th, created to celebrate the dedicated people who care for reptiles, amphibians, and arachnids.

It’s a day to recognise the passion, knowledge, and responsibility that goes into this unique hobby—because let’s be honest, this isn’t a “fill the bowl and go” situation. It’s also about promoting ethical ownership, education, and conservation.

Right now, it’s not officially recognised—but that’s something the community is working to change.

A Surprisingly Large (and Overlooked) Community

Despite how it might seem, reptile keeping is far from a niche hobby.

In the UK alone:

– Nearly 1,000 species of reptiles and amphibians are kept as pets
– Around 8.8 million live as companion animals

That’s a huge, passionate, and knowledgeable community—yet there’s currently no official day dedicated to it. Not one.

Which is… a bit strange.

Celebrating the People Behind the Animals

At its core, National Reptile Keepers Day is about one simple thing: the people.

The ones who:

  • – Spend weeks (or months) researching before getting a new species
  • – Understand temperature gradients better than their home heating
  • – Casually discuss calcium supplementation over dinner
  • – Keep frozen rodents next to the peas without a second thought
  •

These are people committed to learning, improving, and providing the best possible care for their animals. We pride ourselves in having Rangers who fit this brief with perfection.

More than a Celebration

While at its core the people are celebrated, NRKD isn’t just about appreciation—it has real purpose.

🐍 Promoting Responsible Ownership

The day highlights proper husbandry and ethical care, helping set a positive standard both for the hobby and to the wider public.

📚 Education and Changing Perceptions

Reptiles still suffer from misunderstanding and fear (thanks, movies). NRKD aims to replace myths with knowledge and show what responsible care actually looks like.

🌍 Supporting Conservation

Responsible reptile keeping often supports ethical breeding, reducing demand for wild-caught animals. Many keepers contribute to maintaining healthy captive populations—playing a small but important role in conservation.

Building a Stronger Community

Reptile keeping can sometimes feel scattered:

  • – Different species
  • – Different setups
  • – Very different opinions (a lot of opinions)
  •
  • A dedicated day brings people together.
  •

Imagine:

  • – Keepers sharing setups and advice
  • – Newcomers feeling welcomed instead of overwhelmed
  • – Ethical businesses being supported
  • – A shift from constantly defending the hobby to actually celebrating it
  •

That’s what NRKD aims to create.

Why It Matters Now

Reptile keeping faces growing challenges:

  • – Public misunderstanding
  • – Misinformation
  • – Increasing scrutiny and legislation

At the same time, knowledge isn’t always shared as openly as it should be. Here’s the truth: no one knows everything.

The best keepres are the ones who keep learning – and help others do the same. That’s the culture we embody at Animal Club and what NRKD wants to encourage.

What the Day Could Look Like

If it becomes official, National Reptile Keepers Day could be a day where people:

  • – Share their animals and enclosures
  • – Offer advice and support
  • – Educate others
  • – Celebrate progress in the hobby
  •
  • And maybe—just maybe—convince a few more people that snakes aren’t secretly evil.

How You Can Help

For NRKD to become official, it needs support.

That’s where you come in.

By signing the petition, you’re:

  • – Showing the community exists
  • – Proving it matters
  • – Helping it gain recognition
  •

There’s even a chance to win a £500 reptile supply gift card—which, realistically, will be spent immediately on something your reptile didn’t ask for but will definitely benefit from.

Final Thoughts

Reptile keeping has always been about:

  • Learning
  • Improving
  • Doing the best for the animals in our care

National Reptile Keepers Day is simply about recognising that effort—and giving a long-overdue spotlight to the people behind it.

So if you’ve ever:

  • Defended your snake in a conversation
  • Explained UVB lighting like it’s a life mission
  • Perfected an enclosure your reptile immediately ignored

This one’s for you.

Sign the petition. Share the idea. Be part of making it official.

And maybe, just maybe, reptile keepers will finally get their day. 🐍
