What does the Bearded Dragon look like?
A bearded dragon looks a lot like a big lizard. With its rough textured scales flowing down it back; they have claws so that they can hang on to things. They also have a scaly beard (hint: that’s how they got the name Bearded Dragon). The bearded dragon is not huge but can comfortably fit on the forearm of an average size person.
What animal class are they?
The bearded dragon is a Reptile, they are counted as a reptile due to their cold blood.
Where do they come from?
These Dragons are found originally in Australia, however now they are seen all over the world as pets and in zoos. You may find that often friends have ones as pets or even someone like us has brought one in for you to hold.
What does a Bearded Dragon eat?
Bearded Dragons can eat a wide range of live insects such as crickets, mealworms. The dragon also eats vegetables such as sweet potato and pepper and leafy greens such as kale and parsley. Just like us, humans and bearded dragons need to eat lots of fruit in order to stay healthy.
How do you tell the difference between a male and a female?
When the dragon is fully grown (around 6-7 inches in length), take a look at it’s under the tail. The Male has two hemipenal bulges, one on each side of the rear following the vent, that’s how you can differentiate between the male and female.
Is a Bearded Dragon a good pet?
Bearded Dragons have a lot of personalities; they are slow and are good when being handled by children (that’s why we let the children who we visit hold Savage or Roxy). Caring for the dragon is fine if you make sure the habitat is set up right… and you’re good to go. Lastly, the dragon lives up to 8 years or more meaning you can have this pet for near to a decade, so be prepared to have this scaley friend for a while.
How do you look after a Bearded Dragon?
1)The bearded dragons cage must be around 20cm long x 60cm high x 60 cm making sure it’s secure and well-ventilated. There are a wide variety of furnishings for bearded dragons. If you are using sand make sure to use reptile-safe sand.
2)Bearded dragons need a vivarium that ranges from a hotter(38 to 42°C) bright end, to a more comfortable (22 to 26°C) shaded end.
3)The Bearded Dragon usually likes to live on its own; however, if you decide to give the dragon a friend, the opposite gender is often best!
4)Feed your bearded dragon insects, fruit and veg (more info above)
5)This animal is usually best for older children or adults. However, if you plan to keep a bearded dragon with children make sure you clearly explain for them to be gentle and NEVER pull the dragon’s tail.
